The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
